I have been working on a pipe roll design for a few years now and have learned a few things.
First off it is very easy to make a basic pipe roll. It is much more difficult to make pipe roll that functions well and is a pleasure to use. This version is constructed of very soft and supple calf skin. The calf offers very tight grain for durability and strength yet is flexible for ease of use.
The interior edges that will see wear have been turned over for extra durability and refinement. There is an increased tactile feel over simple raw edges which tend to fray. The main pockets feature gussets which give them a third dimension to improve the function. It is easy to put a credit card in your rear pocket. It is difficult to put a tennis ball in there. A pipe or a pouch of tobacco are not flat so it doesnt make sense to have flat pockets!
The tobacco pouch will fit a square tin, a 3oz. packet of ribbon cut tobacco or a 5oz. packet of flake tobacco.
The pipe cleaner sleeve will fit 2 dozen pipe cleaners.
The pipe compartment will fit two pipes of medium to large size in their sleeve. One pipe faces down and one faces up.
There is an exterior pocket for a box of matches or a lighter. This pocket may also store a tamper.
The design works in such a way that there is not much difference in bulk if it is very full or lightly full.
The roll is secured with a solid brass buckle and a brass keeper. The entire interior is lined.
I first picked up a pipe in the early 90's and have been making leathercraft items for the last 9 years. I am proud to be able to now offer this useful accessory. Approximate closed measurements are 9"x 5"x 2.5"
