Absolutely the best proper Artisan belt I am able to offer at this time. 5 years of research, design and sacrifice have been invested into making this belt. After many failed attempts with modern hand tools to cut this leather I searched out an antique plow gauge which is 100 years old. Modern hand tools are not designed to handle leather this thick. It was also necessary to retool an industrial leather splitter to make it able to handle the thickest leather I know of.
There are so many leather workers now compared to when I started 5 years ago. Everyone promises that their 8-9 oz or 10-12 oz leather belt is "built to last" Well, I made and sold those belts and used them personally. They aren't that great. Sure they will hold up well if you work in an office but I wouldn't depend on one in the field. If you work for a living they stretch. If you are into extreme sports or EDC save your money.
The harness leather is over 1/4" thick which is extremely uncommon. The unique tannage of this Harness leather which has not been thinned and is naturally very thick does a superlative job of preserving the fibers. Most comparable leathers of other types of similar thickness would be horribly stiff. These are very nice, flexible and well preserved. In other words, after five years of making and destroying belts this is the belt I am proud to offer you with great confidence.
I advise a maintenance program which advocates hanging the belt to dry after a hard day of work as opposed to leaving it on the sweaty pants. I advocate pure neatsfoot oil when the leather appears dry on the backside. I advocate sealing in the oil with a wax based conditioner. With proper care your belt will sooner be in a museum than a landfill. They are built with years of sacrifice toward being a steward of the earth and living as an artist who believes in a divine power.
I believe in the power of community over the power of profit.
What people are saying:
"Magnificent workmanship & a superb piece of leather. I doubt you'll find a belt of this quality anywhere else."
"Bill has made me a belt of truly superb quality and style. The leather looks and feels great. It's very thick indeed, but comfortable to wear. The buckle too, is really solid, and looks elegant. I can't see how a belt can be made any better. Thanks Bill."
This is a proper tool to enhance your life not something designed to fall apart and waste your valuable resources.
Buckle is secured with hand hammered copper rivets. The buckle is Heavy Duty Stainless Steel and in my opinion the nicest buckle you can buy without getting into custom blacksmith or metal smith work.
Belt is tailor fitted. Please measure from where the leather folds over the buckle to the most commonly used hole. I will add a nominal measurement to accommodate for the thickness of the leather. Just lay the belt flat on the ground and measure. Spacing is 3/4" for comfort with 7 holes.
Leather thickness is 7+mm and is premium quality harness leather which has traditionally been used for applications where durability is absolutely essential to life and limb. Nothing sold in "box" stores has ever been made from harness leather. Chances are you have never seen or felt leather of this quality unless you own a vintage horse saddle or vintage linesmen belt.
Would be an outstanding 3rd Anniversary gift.
